About macOS Support Essentials 10.14
- Day one covers macOS installation and configuration and covers initial installation and setup, managing software updates, creating and managing user accounts and file system security
- Day two looks in more detail at usage management: permissions, system resources, compression and backup solutions and application and document management
- Day three introduces delegates to networking Apple computers including basic networking theory, configuration and troubleshooting and the course wraps up with a collection of system troubleshooting chapters
Prerequisites
Please note that although this is an introductory course, a certain amount of prior knowledge will greatly enhance the effectiveness of the course. For example:
- The material assumes you have a basic understanding of macOS skills and terminology
- It’s advisable to have either an IT background or some basic computer troubleshooting knowledge
- Prior attendance of either or both of Getting Started with macOS or Mac Integration Basics is ideal

Course Outline
Module 1: Installation and Configuration
Prepare and partition the drive, install macOS Mojave, use the installer log files to verify a successful installation, booting to macOS Recovery, configure macOS Mojave with the Setup Assistant, installing configuration profiles, understanding macOS software updates, tips and techniques for troubleshooting an installation problem.
Module 2: Users Accounts
Create and manage user accounts, create and manage administrator accounts, locate directory attributes, security, resetting passwords and managing Keychain passwords.
Module 3: File Systems and Storage
File systems supported by macOS Mojave, Disk Utility and file repair. Encryption with FileVault. File sharing permissions and troubleshooting. System Integrity Protection overview.
Module 4: Data Management
The root volume, file system layout, preferences, managing hidden items, file types unique to macOS Mojave (i.e., bundles and packages), Metadata in macOS, Spotlight, Siri, file archives, disk images. archiving and restoring data with Time Machine, managing backup data, how to access the data outside of Time Machine.
Module 5: Applications and Processes
Applications supported in macOS Mojave, application security, installation and troubleshooting of applications, uninstalling applications, managing Gatekeeper, Sandboxing, Quick Look, advanced features such as auto save, versions, resume and iCloud integration. iCloud Drive feature explored.
Module 6: Network Configuration
Basic networking configuration, TCP/IP networking, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, multiple network connections, appropriate use of network locations, isolating and troubleshooting network elements and using VPN.
Module 7: Network Services
Connecting to common network resources, SMB, AFP, NFS, WebDAV and FTP connections, Bonjour, NetBIOS, the network browser, isolating client software issues from network issues. VNC and SSH, Remote management, Enabling network services on a macOS Sierra client, peer-to-peer collaboration, AirDrop, Firewall as well as techniques to isolate server issues from client and network issues.
Module 8: System Management
Connecting peripherals to a Mac, cabling, connections, device drivers for common peripherals. Troubleshooting boot issues with a Mac at startup, phases of the startup process, which part of the system is active during each phase, issues that can arise, automatic process launching with launched and login window startup items.
