How to Send an iMessage and vCard from Your Address Book

Instead of opening iMessage you can find your contacts and click on an email address or phone number within your address book and it will give you the option to send an iMessage.

A popup dialog will open, allowing you to type your message and you can even include an emoticon.

While you there you can also send the vCard to someone else.

This does not work if only an iPhone phone number is associated with the Mac iMessage app. Unless I’m missing something, the Apple ID associated with that iPhone account must also be active for sending/receiving messages in order to send an iMessage from someone’s contact card as shown here (which is incredibly annoying given that you can send an iMessage from the app using only your iPhone number).
