It’s no secret that Apple go to great lengths to discourage third party and independent repairs, they’ve even come under fire for it in recent years, so we wanted to go over some of the reasons why we support this decision and work in line with Apple’s policies.
Why do I need authorised apple parts?
Firstly, if your device is relatively new, an unauthorised repair will void your warranty. Apple guarantee their parts to be free of manufacturing errors and if an issue becomes apparent within the first two years of ownership, it will be fixed under warranty:
“Apple warrants the Apple-branded hardware product and Apple-branded accessories contained in the original packaging (“Apple Product”) against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple’s published guidelines for a period of TWO (2) YEARS from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser (“Warranty Period”).” – Apple.com View the full warranty here
Secondly, it is difficult to determine the quality of unverified parts. Unauthorised displays may present a number of potential issues such as multi-touch being unresponsive or behaving erratically. The brightness and colour of the display may be affected with true tone not displaying correctly, issues with the ambient light sensor and increased battery drain.
“The iPhone display is engineered together with iOS software for optimal performance and quality. A nongenuine display might cause compatibility or performance issues.”
Quality issues with third party batteries are potentially more serious, with overheating and injury amongst the risks, as well as low battery life and premature failure.
Issues with third party parts may not be immediately apparent. They may simply be incompatible with future software updates, such as updates for the display.
Why do I need an authorised Apple technician?
Authorised technicians are trained by Apple or Apple’s authorised service providers. They know the correct procedures for both top quality repairs and safety. Repairs that don’t follow these procedures can harm your device, or worse, make it unsafe to use. Unauthorised work that goes wrong can also make it more difficult or more expensive to repair your device later on.
How do I tell if a repair centre is authorised?
Apple Authorised Service Providers are permitted to use the authorised service provider logo but to make absolutely sure you can check, or book through, Apple’s own service.
How do I tell if my repair used genuine Apple parts?
Devices using iOS 12 and up will present a warning if unauthorised batteries or displays are inserted. The warning will not affect functionality, the device will remain operational (aside from any of the potential quality issues), but the part will be logged as unauthorised. This is so future repair technicians know what they’re dealing with. Further precautions need to be taken during the repair process to ensure safety and no unintentional damage to the device.
What if my device already has a third party repair?
We can usually replace third party parts but the extent of the repair and whether or not it falls under warranty usually depends on whether or not the parts have caused any damage. You can find out more about your particular situation by contacting our team here.
