Apple Configurator 2 – cfgutil

Along with El Capitan, Apple released Apple Configurator 2. This should be seen as a new tool and not an update for Apple Configurator 1.

There will be a lot of guides on how to use Apple Configurator 2 etc., and will be covered in our iOS Deployment course. But one of the nice features is that you can now automate it with the cfgutil command line tool.

You will need to install the cfgutil tool first. After installing Apple Configurator, run the app and from the Apple Configurator 2 menu select “Install Automation Tools.” This will install the cfgutil tool.

This tool has some great features including:

  • Activate a set of devices
  • Add tags to a set of devices
  • Backup a set of devices
  • Clear the passcode on a set of devices
  • Install apps and profiles on a set of devices
  • Restore a set of Devices
  • Run a script when devices are attached or detached

Plus much more

For more information see the man page for cfgutil

This is a great way to automate your Apple Configurator Workflow. Apple Configurator 2 is shaping up to be a great tool.

    Hi Terry

Apple Configurator 1 will run on El Capitan but to take advantage of new features in iOS 9 you will need Apple Configurator 2.
Please be aware that this is a new app, in fact Apple are pushing it as a different product to Apple Configurator 1.

On first launch it will attempt to migrate your old settings across.

One feature that it does not have is sign in / out which some schools still use.

    Hope that helps!
