Course Description

Mac OS X Support Essentials v10.6 to v10.7 Upgrade is a one-day hands-on course which focuses on the new features found in Mac OS X 10.7 and the Mac OS X Support Essentials 10.7 exam.

The course will focus on key points of the chapters outlined below. This course is only open to delegates who already hold the Apple Certified Support Professional (ACSP) certification for Mac OS X 10.6.

Prerequisites

Students should have the following prerequisite knowledge prior to attending this course:

• Completion of the Mac OS X Support Essentials v10.6 course and exam

Apple Certified Support Professional exam

The Apple Certified Support Professional (ACSP) 10.7 certification is granted on successful completion of the Mac OS X Support Essentials v10.7 exam.

Mac OS X 10.6 to 10.7 Support Essentials Upgrade

Installation: Understand how to partition a drive and the various formats supported. Understand the installation and update procedure as well as using the log files to verify a successful installation. Understand how the setup assistant works. Troubleshooting failed installations and using the Lion recovery disk. Using the Setup Assistant to configure and System Preferences to customise OS X Lion.

Users Accounts: Understand how to create and troubleshoot the various types of user accounts available. Manage login options and Fast User Switching. Look at the various security aspects of user accounts including configuring and resetting passwords, keychains and legacy File Vault.

File Systems: Understand the pros and cons of the various file systems supported by Mac OS X. An introduction to Understand, use and troubleshoot POSIX and ACL permissions using the GUI and command line. Using Filevault 2 to secure the OS X file system.

Data Management: Understand the boot volume, how the file system is laid out, especially the various Library directories which hold preferences and frameworks. You will also look at how Mac OS X handles different files types, resource forks and packages. How spotlight works and how to backup/archive files by using Time Machine, disk images and archives.

Applications and Processes: Understand the different application types supported by Mac OS X. How to install and update Applications. Troubleshooting Applications and Dashboard. Using Autosave and Versions.

Network Configuration: Understand how to setup, configure and troubleshooting the various networking interfaces available such Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Create locations and use other tools to troubleshoot networking problems.

Network Services: Understand the various network file systems supported such as AFP, SMB, FTP, NFS and WebDAV. How to share files between Macs and Windows PCs including using Airdrop. How to troubleshoot network services. Enable the other built in services such as web sharing, screen sharing and the built in Application firewall. Introduction to Directory Services and network login/authentication.

Peripherals and Printing: Connect and troubleshoot different types of peripherals such as printers, hard drives and scanners over USB for FireWire. Understand the print system in Mac OS X, how to troubleshoot printing and create PDF workflows.

Systems Startup: The last troubleshoot is all about understanding how Mac OS X boots. You will look at each phase of the boot process, how to identify that stage and what troubleshooting tools we can use. You will have a in-depth look at two key processes, launched and the login window.
