Dispelling Common Myths

Mac Are More Expensive Than PCs
This argument doesn’t really apply since Apple moved to Intel processors and a like for like comparison can be done based on capability. Additionally, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is lower with a Mac. Not only are they easier and therefore cheaper to support, but a Mac retains value after a number of years. Leasing models leverage residual value to reduce the cost of ownership for those who are happy with this model of procurement.

I Have Been Told I Can’t Migrate My Data
Again this is simply not true. There are a number of tools that can facilitate the migration of email from Exchange and the latest versions of MS Office for Mac are hard to distinguish from their PC counterparts.

Macs Have Compatibility Issues
There are some applications that still only work on Windows. Virtualisation software or Apple’s Bootcamp allow you to host and run Windows and Windows only software on your Mac. One of the most common examples is Sage accounting software. We have extensive experience at running Sage on Mac hardware, it is, after all, how we run our own accounts department. (We practice what we preach!) Additionally, there are platform independant, cloud based solutions that remove the dependancy on any particular operating system.

Migrating From PC to Mac is a Complex and Lengthy Process
A myth propagated by PC support companies. With an experienced mac support partner, such as Amsys, the process is straightforward and relatively simple. A Harley Street clinic were told it would take 3 months to move to Mac by their support company. We did it in a matter of days, with the majority of the initial set up done over the weekend. The clinic was up and running on day 3 (Monday morning).

It’s Difficult To Learn How To Use A Mac, I’ve Been Using A PC For Years
Once a user is shown the basics and some neat productivity shortcuts, most find it an easy and intuitive computer to use and rapidly grow to love the platform. With every migration we recommend some user migration training from one of the Amsys trainers.
Amsys Process
Step 1. Define your Hardware Needs.
We talk to you about the hardware you are interested in buying. We are not a reseller so we will match your requirements to the most appropriate hardware, NOT try to sell you what we have in stock. We then give you options on how to purchase that hardware, facilitated by our support team.
Step 2. System and Software.
We understand what applications (software packages) you will be running and how you wish to operate. We will analyse your server and virtualisation requirements, mail hosting, mobile and remote working, backup solution and disaster recovery options and a host of other services such as address book and calendar sharing.
Step 3. Initial Recommendation.
We will come and visit your offices to present an initial recommendation and talk through a possible solution with you to ensure all your operational requirements are met. At this stage (if not before) we will look into your existing infrastructure and identify any challenges that may need to be overcome, and understand your type and volume of data to be migrated.
Step 4. Solution Defintion.
We present you the final solution, gain your acceptance, source hardware and schedule the migration.
Step 5. Deployment.
This is the execution. We conduct the migration and deployment against a detailed Statement of Works, and ask you to sign off the work once successfully completed.
Step 6. Training and Support.
We deliver the user migration training you require and bring you under our support umbrella (remote technical support, server monitoring, etc) and continue to support you as you settle in to your new Macs.
