Overview

During this 2 day course Amsys Apple Master IT Trainer will teach you:

  • An overview of what Munki is and what it can do
  • The admin tools supplied with Munki, including the main GUI tool and the key command line tools
  • How the client interacts with the server, what software is required and how to configure the client

Detailed Agenda

  • Overview: We kick things off with an overview of what Munki is and what it can do. We take a look at the infrastructure required and the type of skills required to deploy and manage a Munki installation
  • Server Setup: A typical Munki server requires a web server to host the repository of software packages. We will cover how to setup OS X Server, as well as looking at other popular platforms including Unix/Linux in a VM environment
  • Admin Machine: The administration machine can be the server or a separate OS X computer. We take a look at the admin tools supplied with Munki, including the main GUI tool and the key command line tools
  • Client Machine: The whole purpose of Munki is to deploy packages to the client. Here we will take a look at how the client interacts with the server, what software is required and how to configure the client
  • Manifests: Manifests are used to keep track of the list of items available to install to a client, verify their installation, remove from the client and verify their removal. We take a dive into these XML files to understand their structure and cover the tools used to create them
  • Catalogs: Catalogs are used to keep track of which packages are available for deployment. Admins can use catalogs to filter when a version of a package is available to a specific group of clients. These can be used to create workflows for development, testing, and deployment. We take a look at the contents of these files as well as how to create them with the tools supplied
  • Package Creation: Supplying well-crafted packages for deployment is a key skill. We cover the best tools available to create packages for distribution as well as covering how to re-package certain apps that may come with an incompatible installer. We also take a look at configuring pre and post-install scripts as well as configuring a choices.XML file. Finally we look at the popular AutoPKG tool used for software updates
  • Self Service App: New to Munki is the self service portal. Learn how to setup, configure and deploy within your Munki environment.
Secure the Repository: The repository has all your software, so security is key. We will look at how you can use basic authentication or SSL certificates to secure it
  • Scenarios: In this chapter we’ll cover other scenarios that you may use Munki for, including deployment of configuration profiles, managing printers, managing admin rights and payload free packages
  • Troubleshooting: Finally, we cover the tips and tricks on how to maintain and troubleshoot your Munki server
