Learning iOS Design

Learning iOS design
Level: Beginner
Price: £597.00 (+VAT)

This course guides you through each stage of designing an iOS application (iPhone app) from scratch. From the initial draft outline of what the app will do, creating wireframes of each screen, to finally creating assets which you will hand over to the developer to turn into a real world app.

This a very hands on course and each subject has extensive hands on exercises to re-enforce what you have learned. All our development courses are taught by developers who have developed real world apps.

Course Overview

When developing mobiles apps, the design phases are as or sometimes as important than the actual code developed for the app. A great app stands out not just because of its functionality but also the design. The design stage would include the user experience, the workflow of the app, the branding, any media assets etc. In a typical app development project, over 40% of the time spent can be on the design phase.

Having the correct skills to create the user interface, workflow and assets which can be handed over to the developers is key to a successful project. This course will teach you these skills. This course does not cover coding but instead covers all aspects of designing an iOS app. Great for existing designers who are about to get involved in an iOS project or even developers themselves who would like to get the skills to make them even more versatile.

Detailed Agenda

Please note: your instructor may choose, add, change or remove course elements depending on the specific requirements of each course to ensure the best possible outcome for each delegate

  • The iOS Platform overview: Before you can design any app you need to understand what the platform is and its capabilities
  • The Outline: This is all about creating an initial draft of the functionality of the app and which devices it will be targeted for
  • Getting Familiar with iOS: Understand Apple’s UI implementation for touch devices. Learn what UI elements Apple give you for ‘free’ and which ones you can reskin with your own look and feel. Also understand what mechanisms Apple give you for navigating the user through the app
  • Tools: Here you will get an overview of the Apple Developer tools as well as some useful third party tools. We will look at these tools, not from a coder’s point of view but rather from a designer putting together a prototype app
  • Wire Frames: Uses a number of tools to create wireframes of each screen that will make up your app. A wireframe defines the workflow/navigation of the app and what function each screen will perform. At this stage, we basically define what the app will do
  • Mock Ups: After the wireframes, we start designing each screen in terms of how it will look to the end user. This is the main stage of the design phase. Again we will use a number of tools to create these mockups
  • Media Assets: Once the wireframes and mockups have been created, the next stage is to create media assets of every item
required in the app and hand them to the developer. This ranges from colour palette selection, to images, movies and audio files required. It’s very important to deliver the media in the correct format, resolution etc and to also future proof them for new devices that Apple may release
  • Prototypes: We will use Apple’s development tools to build some prototypes that will utilise your designs.
Universal apps: Learn how to design apps that will scale from an iPhone to an iPad. Also learn how to design for different
    orientations
  • Cross Platform: While this course is aimed at iOS a lot of the skills you will learn can be utilised on other platforms, such as Android and Windows Mobile. Here we will discuss the major difference between these platforms and which assets you can reuse
